3G explained: The internet leaves the desk.
3G made richer web pages, email and video calling practical on a handset. HSPA improved data rates. Many operators have refarmed older spectrum, so a 3G-capable phone does not guarantee a 3G service today.
UMTS and WCDMA
UMTS is the 3G family evolved from GSM. Its WCDMA radio interface uses wideband code division, allowing users to share a radio channel through different codes.
HSPA made it faster
High Speed Packet Access improved downlink and uplink data handling, helping early smartphones load websites and stream media. HSPA+ extended those capabilities further.
A generation in transition
A network can reuse, or refarm, spectrum for newer technology. Check operator notices about legacy services; a handset’s supported generations do not establish what is available at your location.
