2G explained: When mobile became digital.
2G brought digital voice and SMS to everyday phones. GPRS and EDGE added packet data for basic browsing. It is useful to understand the foundations, but availability depends on your operator and region.
The digital starting point
GSM divides a radio carrier into time slots so multiple users can share it. The system was designed around digital voice and messaging, with a SIM providing subscriber identity.
GPRS and EDGE
GPRS added packet-switched data to GSM networks. EDGE used improved modulation to carry more bits under suitable conditions. These enhancements are often called 2.5G and 2.75G.
Where it fits today
Older phones and some connected devices may depend on 2G. Check local network availability before relying on one; support varies by operator. Basic data services are not a substitute for modern mobile broadband.
